REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION
The Associated Air Balance Council administers four different certification programs for AABC member agencies.
Test and Balance Engineer (TBE)
All AABC member agencies must have at least one certified TBE on staff. The TBE is ultimately responsible for reviewing and certifying all test and balance reports issued by the agency.
In order to be eligible for certification as a TBE, the applying individual must have a minimum of eight (8) years test and balance experience. Applicants with engineering degrees will receive four (4) years credit toward the experience requirement.
Approved TBE candidates are administered a thorough and rigorous examination which tests their knowledge and technical competence in air and water balance, sound and vibration testing, fan and pump laws, instrumentation and psychometrics. The TBE examination is only administered at AABC Headquarters in Washington, DC or at the AABC Annual or Semi-Annual Meetings. Candidates who pass the examination are issued a TBE registration number and Annual Certificate. Certification is renewable on an annual basis.
Test and Balance Technician Certification
AABC requires that all eligible technicians employed by member agencies are certified. Eligible technicians are defined as those with a minimum of four years test and balance experience who have been employed by an AABC agency for the past 12 months.
Candidates for technician certification undergo intensive field training in addition to classroom instruction. Each AABC member agency is responsible for the administration of in-house training programs for their employees.
Technicians who receive a passing score on the certification examination are issued a Technician Certification number and an Annual Certificate. Technician certification is renewable on an annual basis, and is only valid while employed by an AABC member.
Cleanroom Certification
Employees of AABC member companies must be able to demonstrate their knowledge of cleanroom applications and testing procedures, in accordance with industry accepted standards and practices. Requirements for certification include maintaining certification as an AABC TBE or Technician and receiving a passing score on the cleanroom certification examination.

Commissioning Certification
Commissioning Agents perform functional performance tests and acceptance of HVAC systems in the building commissioning process. Candidates for certification must demonstrate knowledge of the commissioning process in accordance with the AABC Commissioning Guideline, maintain certification as a TBE, and pass a rigorous real-life examination in order to be designated as a Certified Commissioning Agent.
